Danish Data Center Industry (DDI)

The Danish Data Center Industry believes that the role of data centers in digitalization and the green transition is a topic of great interest to the Danish public. That is why Nordic Data Center Week (September 23-27) will focus on the essential role of data centers in our digital lives and the green transition.
Nordic Data Center Week is a collaboration between the Nordic data center organizations, aimed at promoting knowledge and understanding of data centers' role in a digitalized society.
Director Henrik Hansen states:"With the expansion of artificial intelligence (AI), Denmark's data usage will increase significantly in the coming years. Concretely, we can expect to see more data centers in the Danish landscape. Support and understanding from local communities are essential to ensure that Denmark continues to secure the right resources, investments, and conditions for data centers in the future."
Head of Strategy & Operations, Merima Dzanic, elaborates:"With Nordic Data Center Week, we hope to plant the seeds for a grassroots movement where local communities, local businesses, and data centers work together to create the best conditions for the green transition and digitalization."
Technology Understanding on the School Curriculum
This year’s Nordic Data Center Week is the first of its kind, with activities centered around the local communities in Viborg, Fredericia, and Esbjerg, where data centers are already a prominent presence.
To engage school-aged children and promote students’ understanding of technology, 6th-grade students from Viborg, Fredericia, and Esbjerg have been invited to visit a local data center. Here, they will get a unique insight into the engine behind the internet, how a data center operates, and how data centers, AI, and the green transition are interconnected.
In Fredericia, Business Fredericia’s career coordinator, Ruth Axø, is also excited about this new initiative:"As a career coordinator, I am pleased to see bridges being built between young people, education, and businesses. Knowledge of technology, sustainability, and digitalization has become essential for ensuring that Denmark’s youth remain competitive in the future job market. A close collaboration between tech companies and schools is crucial to securing these competencies."
Beyond the activities arranged in collaboration with local schools, a debate on data centers and their significance for local communities has been organized in cooperation with Business Viborg.
On September 24, Director Henrik Hansen will be one of the speakers at Fredericia TALKS (https://businessfredericia.dk/arrangement/save-the-date-fredericia-talks-hjertet-i-den-groenne-omstilling/), a new conference focused on digitalization, leadership, and the green transition.
Data Centers Are Essential to Achieving Denmark’s Digitalization Goals
Denmark has ambitious goals for digitalization and investments in AI and quantum technology. Digitalization is expected to strengthen the green transition, simplify business operations in Denmark, upgrade the digital infrastructure of the healthcare sector, and potentially develop a Danish language model. However, any ambition to enhance and promote digitalization in Denmark must be accompanied by a corresponding focus on the necessary digital infrastructure, including data centers.
Several data centers have already chosen to establish themselves in Denmark. One reason is that data centers located in the Nordic region generally emit less CO₂, thereby providing Danish data consumers with a lower carbon footprint.
Data centers also benefit local businesses. Experience shows that when major data center players establish themselves in a region, they create excellent opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to invest and set up operations in the same local areas.
