Nordic Data Center Week 2025 brought together students, companies, and decision-makers around one central agenda: how data centers can drive digitalization, green energy, and the careers of the future.
From school visits in Esbjerg and Fredericia to a pitch event, the Fredericia Talks conference, and career days with Microsoft and Digital Realty, one thing became clear: data centers are far more than server halls. They are the backbone of our digital and green future.
Nordic Data Center Week is a collaboration between the Nordic data center organizations with the purpose of promoting knowledge and understanding of the role data centers play in a digitalized society.
“We launched Nordic Data Center Week last year as part of a broader awareness and outreach initiative, where data centers aim to strengthen dialogue with the local communities they are part of,” says Christine Kjær Jacobsen, Marketing & Communication Manager at Datacenter Industrien.
Students Behind the Scenes
In Esbjerg, Bulk Infrastructure opened its doors to local school classes. Students were given a rare tour of server rooms and cooling facilities and experienced firsthand that the internet does not simply “exist in the cloud,” but has a physical foundation in large-scale data centers. In addition to the tour, students were introduced to how Esbjerg’s role as an energy metropolis makes the city an ideal hub for digital infrastructure.
“We want to make data centers more tangible for young people. When students see how we work with both technology and sustainability in practice, they realize that this is an industry where they themselves can help shape the future,” says Rune Bråten of Bulk Infrastructure.
In Fredericia, Google and Fredericia Maskinmesterskole (FMS) invited local students inside for a day of both technical insight and societal perspectives. Here, they learned about security, sustainability, and excess heat reuse, and had the opportunity to meet the technicians who keep the infrastructure running.
For many, it was an eye-opener to see that their digital everyday life has a very physical foundation in large server halls. The visit was connected to FMS’s data center specialization program, developed in collaboration with Google and several Danish companies.
“These types of partnerships help bridge business, education, and opportunity. It is a strong example of how companies, educational institutions, and young people can come together around knowledge, curiosity, and the skills of the future — while also showing young people the many local career paths the data center industry can offer,” says Ruth Axø, Business Playmaker at Fredericia Municipality.
Innovation and Growth at Fredericia Talks
One of the week’s major initiatives was the Net Zero Start-Up Hub pitch event in Fredericia. Ten promising companies were selected to pitch their innovations to an expert panel consisting of leading voices from Denmark’s data center, energy, and startup ecosystems.
All solutions focused on the green transition or the energy systems of the future, and the winners were honored during the Fredericia Talks conference, where decision-makers, experts, and business leaders discussed Denmark’s opportunities as a digital and green hub.
Seven companies were selected to participate in a six-month incubation program in Fredericia in 2026, while the top three were awarded cash prizes sponsored by Google.
“Denmark has established itself as a center for sustainable digital infrastructure, and Fredericia is a great example of how local and global innovation can come together. Today’s event demonstrates the strength of the ecosystem in Denmark and Europe — where start-ups, industry, and decision-makers work together to accelerate the data center industry’s path toward net zero. Google is proud to be part of this journey,” adds Niels Andersen, Senior Public Affairs Manager, Google Data Centers.
Career Paths and Skills
At TEKNIKA Engineering College in Copenhagen, Datacenter Industrien joined Microsoft and Digital Realty at a career fair to represent the industry. Students and young professionals had the opportunity not only to meet employees and hear personal career stories, but also to learn more about the future prospects of the industry.
The week concluded with a career event hosted by Digital Realty and Microsoft. In the morning, students were given the opportunity to visit Digital Realty’s data center, which is normally closed to the public. At Microsoft, panel discussions and workshops focused on how technicians and specialists can find their way into one of the world’s fastest-growing industries.
Webinars, Networking, and Local Initiatives
The week also featured a range of professional webinars hosted by Arrow, Nordcad, Onnec, and Siemens, focusing on topics ranging from technology development to energy efficiency. In addition, Mercantec and DEIF organized an event in Skive, where young people gained insight into the skills and technologies demanded by the data center industry.
A sold-out networking event hosted together with DI Digital posed the question: How can Denmark and Europe ensure AI capacity, data security, and the green transition at the same time?
The backdrop for the discussion was the release of the report The Backbone of Digitalization, which highlights the growing importance of data centers for society, business, and the climate.
A Week of Perspective: Local Communities, Energy, and Responsibility
Nordic Data Center Week 2025 demonstrated that data centers are not just buildings, but key pillars of digitalization, job creation, and the green transition. The week made it clear that technological understanding begins already in primary school, that young people need to see themselves as active participants in the digital society of the future, and that Denmark has a unique opportunity to connect green energy with digital infrastructure.
At the same time, it was emphasized that political frameworks, local engagement, and export ambitions must go hand in hand if we are to seize these opportunities.
Nordic Data Center Week 2025 is not just a themed week — it is an invitation to shape the future together.
